Four books to support and inspire you in pregnancy and childbirth

Since Giving Birth in Ireland was launched, so many women have said to us, ‘I wish I had had that book when I was pregnant.’ An anthology by a wide range of authors – mothers, birth partners, midwives, doulas – Giving Birth in Ireland is the handbook and inspiration we’ve needed for a long time.

Su Huschke is a member of the Irish Birth Movement and one of the editors of Giving Birth in Ireland. We spoke to her about her favourite books on pregnancy and childbirth.

The Basic Needs of a Woman in Labour by Ruth Ehrhardt

‘If you don’t have time to read anything else, read The Basic Needs of a Woman in Labour. A small booklet that tells you the most important things about how birth is meant to be.’

Reclaiming Childbirth as a Rite of Passage by Rachel Reed

‘Rachel Reed talks you through the history of birth and how it all went wrong, and how we can get it right if we trust women’s experiences rather than made-up rules and regulations.’

Spiritual Midwifery by Ina May Gaskin

‘One of the classics. A load of inspiring homebirth stories with some psychedelic flavouring.’
