From the introduction:
'One hundred years on from the Modreeny ambush on Friday, 3 June 1921, it is challenging to capture the reality of the sudden, short, sharp but deadly encounter on the road between Borrisokane and Cloughjordan. Contemporary records and newspaper accounts exist but, as the casualties were all Crown Forces, there was no "Military Court of Inquiry in Lieu of Inquests on Civilians killed" held in the aftermath of Modreeny, so we do not have the benefit of a file of War Office 35 series statements, such as exist for many other events in this period. We, the authors, are relying on the accounts of individual and organisations involved an dour own research over the years to create this narrative. ... Despite the limitations, we hope this telling of the Modreeny story will help us both to preserve and learn from our shared history.
